77 Countries Praise Cambodia's Human Rights Efforts in UPR Review

PHNOM PENH, May 10, 2024 — During the fourth round of the Universal Periodic Review (UPR) of Cambodia, which saw participation from 100 countries, 77 nations commended Cambodia's initiatives in promoting and protecting human rights. In contrast, 23 countries expressed concerns over various issues, which the Cambodian Human Rights Committee (CHRC) described as unclear, politically motivated, or based on misunderstandings of Cambodia's actual situation. Out of these 23, 13 countries combined their concerns with praise for Cambodia's efforts.

The CHRC's statement on May 10, 2024, highlighted that the majority of countries acknowledged Cambodia's significant achievements and encouraged continued efforts in human rights advancements. This widespread commendation serves as tangible evidence of Cambodia's proper direction in governance and development, particularly noteworthy after the economic rebound post-COVID-19 pandemic, which fortified the foundation for enhancing civil liberties in the nation.

The statement also clarified the role of the UPR mechanism, emphasizing its purpose as a platform for sharing best practices and mutual learning among United Nations members to foster global human rights progress. It is not intended for criticism, pressure, or degradation.

Furthermore, the CHRC expressed disappointment with the few media outlets that disproportionately highlighted the critical views of a minority of nations during the UPR session. The session was intended to review the overall human rights situation in Cambodia comprehensively.
